My name is Nikki Evans and I am a 26-year old photography student at The Art Institute of Fort Worth. I first came to Fortress as a high school student and I can honestly say that Fortress has changed my life. Fortress and the people who have worked and volunteered there over the years have helped me finish high school, get enrolled in college, and keep my goals in front of me.
As a teenager, one of my favorite things about Fortress was being a camper at Camp of the Hills. After I graduated, I spent the next six summers being a counselor there, and it is my favorite place on earth. I don't know what I'll do when that first summer comes that I'm not able to go out there.
Over the years, I've volunteered at Fortress in a variety of ways, from helping take care of kids to photography projects to painting the art you see on the front windows and everything in between. I have even spoken at events and shared my story, and last year I served as a mentor to one of the elementary-aged girls in the after-school program. I feel blessed that God has given me talents that He can use at Fortress and that I'm able to give back to the place that has meant so much to me.
This year, I'm returning to Fortress as an employee (I worked in the Homework Room several years ago). I will be working in the Enrichment Lab and am excited to use my talents and skills to inspire and teach the kids who come through my classroom, knowing that Fortress will mean as much to them someday as it does to me.
